1 What is FCI Assistant Grade III?

FCI Assistant Grade III (also called FCI AG-III or AG 3) is a Category III post recruited by the Food Corporation of India - a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution.

FCI is the backbone of India's food security system. It procures, stores, and distributes foodgrains across the country. Working as an FCI Assistant means being part of this critical national infrastructure.

Quick fact: FCI AG-III is one of the few central government jobs where agriculture graduates have a direct, dedicated stream - the Technical post. Your degree is not just useful, it is required.

2 The 5 streams of FCI AG-III

FCI AG-III is recruited under five different streams. Each one suits a different type of candidate - pick the one your degree matches:

General

Office work, files, admin tasks.

Any graduate

Depot

FCI godowns, grain handling.

Any graduate

Accounts

Financial records, payments, audits.

B.Com graduate

Hindi

Translation, official correspondence.

Hindi graduate

For agriculture graduates, AG-III Technical is the ideal choice. It's the stream where your B.Sc. syllabus directly translates into exam scoring.

3 Why agri grads should target Technical

Here are the honest, practical reasons this stream is built for you:

  • Your degree is the eligibility - Only science and agriculture graduates can apply. Smaller competition pool than General.
  • Phase 2 Paper 2 covers your subjects - Agriculture, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics. You've already studied this.
  • Massive vacancies - Thousands of vacancies in each cycle, with Technical posts spread across all zones.
  • Central government job - Pension, allowances, transfers, full job security.
  • Stable career path - Promotions to AG-II, AG-I, and Manager grades through internal exams.
  • Pan-India presence - FCI offices and depots exist in every state. Choose your home zone.

4 Eligibility criteria

๐ŸŽ“ Educational qualification

๐Ÿ’ป Computer Knowledge (Phase 2): Fundamentals, MS Office, Operating Systems, Internet, Networking, Cyber Security basics, Shortcuts.

Phase 2 Paper 2 - Technical (Agriculture stream)

This is the most important paper for agriculture students - 120 marks deciding your final rank. The Technical paper has two groups, and you must choose one while filling the application form:

โš ๏ธ Important - One-time choice: When filling the application form, you must select either Group A or Group B. This choice is final and cannot be changed under any circumstances. Choose the group that matches your degree subjects and strengths.

GROUP A

Agriculture + Bio Sciences

Best for B.Sc. Agriculture / Botany / Zoology / Bio-Tech / Microbiology graduates

๐ŸŒพ
Agriculture Indian Agri statistics, Plant Protection, Entomology, Agri Economics
๐ŸŒฟ
Botany Cell Biology, Genetics, Plant Classification, Ecology, Photosynthesis, Biochemistry
๐Ÿ›
Zoology Animal Cell, Heredity, Animal Classification, Microorganisms, Insects & Rodents
GROUP B

Agriculture + Physical Sciences

Best for B.Sc. Agriculture / Chemistry / Physics / Food Tech / Agri Engineering grads

๐ŸŒพ
Agriculture Indian Agri statistics, Plant Protection, Entomology, Agri Economics
โš—๏ธ
Chemistry Chemical Bonding, Organic & Inorganic basics, Chemistry in daily life
๐Ÿ”ฌ
Physics Measurements, Basic Physics, Light, Electricity

๐Ÿ“š Detailed syllabus for each subject

๐ŸŒพ Agriculture (in BOTH groups): Statistics of Indian Agriculture (cereals & pulses), Agricultural Economics, Plant Protection, Elementary Entomology, Crop production basics, Storage of foodgrains (highly important - FCI is all about storage).

๐ŸŒฟ Botany (Group A only): Cell Biology (tissue, organ, organ system), Genetics, Plant Classification, Plant Diversity, Ecology, Life Processes (photosynthesis, respiration, circulation, movement), Basics of Biochemistry.

๐Ÿ› Zoology (Group A only): Animal Cell & Tissue, Organ Systems, Heredity & Variation, Animal Classification, Microorganisms, Insects & Rodents (very important - links to grain storage pests).

โš—๏ธ Chemistry (Group B only): Chemical Bonding, Organic Chemistry (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, aldehydes, acids), Inorganic Chemistry basics, Chemistry in daily life.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Physics (Group B only): Measurements, Basic Physics concepts, Light, Electricity.

How to choose between Group A and Group B: Pick whichever group's two non-agriculture subjects you're stronger in. If you studied Botany and Zoology in school/college (most B.Sc. Agri students did), Group A is usually the natural fit. If your strength was Physics and Chemistry (Food Technology, Agri Engineering grads), pick Group B. Don't let anyone else decide - it's your call, and it's permanent.

Smart strategy: Agriculture and Storage of Foodgrains carry significant weight in the Technical paper, regardless of group. Grain storage, pest management at depot level, fumigation, and quality checks are FCI's core operations - questions reflect that.

7 Salary and perks

9 Step-by-step preparation strategy

Here's a realistic 4-5 month study plan that has worked for thousands of selected candidates:

Phase 1 ยท Weeks 1-6
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Foundation

Read official syllabus carefully. Solve 2-3 previous year papers before studying - see the depth and pattern. Identify weakest sections (most agri students struggle with English and Quants). Build daily current affairs habit. Revise B.Sc. Agri textbooks - they ARE your study material.

Phase 2 ยท Weeks 7-14
๐Ÿ“š Subject building

Cover English, Reasoning, Quant fundamentals - 1.5 hrs per section daily. Cover Technical Paper 2 subjects topic by topic. Make short notes. Take one sectional test per subject every week. Don't ignore Computer Knowledge - easy 30 marks.

Phase 3 ยท Last 4-6 weeks
๐ŸŽฏ Practice & mocks

Full Phase 1 mock every 3 days. Full Phase 2 (Paper 1 + 2) mock every 5 days. Analyse every mock. Revise short notes daily. Last 2 weeks entirely on revision.

11 Common mistakes to avoid

1
Choosing the wrong stream

If you're an agriculture graduate, AG-III Technical gives you a massive advantage. Don't apply for General just because it sounds easier.

2
Ignoring Phase 2 Paper 2

This paper carries 120 marks and decides your final rank. Many candidates focus on Paper 1 and lose selection here.

3
Skipping NCERT science books

The Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, and Physics in Paper 2 are at NCERT level. Don't dive into B.Sc.-level depth and waste time.

4
Treating Phase 1 carelessly

It's qualifying, but if you don't clear sectional cut-offs, you don't reach Phase 2 at all.

5
Not solving previous year papers

FCI repeats patterns. Last 5 years of PYQs are the best predictor of what's coming.

6
Studying without short notes

In the last 2 weeks before exam, you can't re-read books. Notes save you.

7
Choosing the wrong zone

Once you select a zone (North/South/East/West/NE), it cannot be changed. Pick wisely based on cut-offs and posting preferences.

8
Picking the wrong Group (A or B) hastily

The Group choice in the Technical Paper 2 is permanent - no changes allowed once submitted. Pick based on which two subjects (Botany+Zoology vs Chemistry+Physics) you're stronger in. Don't pick what others picked. It's your call.

12 Frequently asked questions

Should I choose Group A or Group B in the Technical paper? +
It depends on your degree subjects. Group A (Agriculture + Botany + Zoology) is the natural fit for most B.Sc. Agriculture, Botany, Zoology, Bio-Tech, and Microbiology graduates. Group B (Agriculture + Chemistry + Physics) suits Food Technology, Agricultural Engineering, and candidates who studied chemistry and physics in depth. The choice is made on the application form and cannot be changed later, so pick carefully.
Can I change my Group choice after applying? +
No. The group choice (Group A or Group B) made during the online application is final. FCI does not allow any changes under any circumstances. So evaluate your strengths carefully before submitting the form.
What's the difference between AG-III General, Depot, and Technical? +
General is office and administrative work. Depot is similar but you'll be posted at FCI godowns supervising grain storage. Technical is a science-focused role for agriculture/biology graduates that involves quality testing, pest management, and grain science.
How many vacancies are usually released? +
FCI typically releases thousands of vacancies in each cycle, distributed across all five zones and streams. Specific numbers are confirmed in the official notification.
How many months do I need to prepare? +
For agriculture graduates targeting AG-III Technical, 4-5 months of focused preparation is usually enough since the Technical paper overlaps with your degree subjects. General stream candidates may need 5-6 months.
Is there negative marking? +
Yes. 0.25 marks (one-fourth) are deducted for every wrong answer in both Phase 1 and Phase 2.
Can I apply for multiple streams? +
No. You can apply for only one stream and one zone in a single recruitment cycle. Choose carefully based on your eligibility and strengths.
What is the FCI AG-III in-hand salary? +
The in-hand monthly salary typically ranges from โ‚น40,000 to โ‚น50,000, depending on the posting location, applicable allowances, and DA revisions.
Is B.Sc. Agriculture sufficient for AG-III Technical? +
Yes. B.Sc. with Agriculture as a subject is one of the eligible degrees. You'll need at least 60% marks (with relaxation for SC/ST/OBC categories).
When will the FCI AG-III 2026 notification be released? +
The notification is expected around August-September 2026. Always check the official FCI recruitment portal (recruitmentfci.in) for confirmed dates.
Is the marking only based on Phase 2? +
For General and Depot candidates, only Phase 2 Paper 1 counts. For Technical, Accounts, and Hindi candidates, the final merit is calculated using Paper 1 + Paper 2 combined marks.

๐ŸŽฏ Final words

FCI Assistant Grade III is one of the strongest central government opportunities for graduates - and for agriculture students in particular, the Technical stream is a genuine advantage. Your degree gives you a head start that General-stream candidates simply don't have.

The key to cracking this exam is recognising that Phase 2 Paper 2 is where selection actually happens. Build your strategy around it. Cover the basics solidly, practice mocks honestly, and revise consistently.
