NABARD Grade A at a glance
NABARD — the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development — is India's apex development finance institution for the rural economy. It does not lend to individuals. It refinances the banks that do, builds rural infrastructure through funds such as RIDF, and supports Farmer Producer Organisations, the SHG–Bank Linkage programme and watershed projects. Grade A is the entry-level officer post: Assistant Manager.
Most of the hiring happens under RDBS (Rural Development Banking Service), and within RDBS the General stream is by far the largest pool — open to graduates of any discipline, which means a B.Sc. Agriculture qualifies you directly.

Streams and where the seats are
Within the 85 RDBS posts of the 2025 cycle, the General stream carried 48 — the single largest pool, and the one most agriculture graduates compete in. The agriculture-specialist streams are real but small.
- General — 48 posts. Any discipline. Paper II is ESI + ARD.
- Specialist streams — Plantation & Horticulture, Fisheries, Food Processing, Land Development & Soil Science, Agriculture Engineering. Typically one or two seats each, and Paper II is replaced by the discipline's own paper.
- Legal and P&SS — separate services with their own qualifications.
Vacancy trend
Vacancies almost halved between 2022 and 2025. Plan for a shrinking intake, not a generous one.

Why the calendar matters
From the day the advertisement appears you have about six weeks to Prelims and ten to Mains. That is nowhere near enough time to build ARD and ESI from scratch. Everyone who clears this exam started before the notification — so if the 2026-27 notification is not out yet, you are at exactly the right point in the calendar to begin.

The criteria below are for RDBS, General stream — the largest pool and the one open to any degree.
Educational qualification
- A Bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 60% aggregate (55% for SC / ST / PwBD), or
- A Post Graduate degree with at least 55% (50% for SC / ST / PwBD), or
- CA / CS / ICWA, or
- A Ph.D.
A B.Sc. Agriculture with 60% qualifies you for the General stream directly. You do not need to wait for an agriculture-specialist vacancy.

You must be between 21 and 30 years as on the cut-off date given in the notification.

- Paper I is an essay, plus a precis of 120–180 words, plus a letter or comprehension of 200–220 words. It is typed, not handwritten.
- Specialist streams replace Paper II with their own discipline paper.

50 marks, 20–45 minutes. A psychometric test is mandatory but is not scored — it informs the interview panel rather than adding to your total.
Where the 250 marks that decide your rank actually sit
This is the table most aspirants never internalise. Prelims contributes nothing to your final rank. It is a gate, not a score.

The consequence
Your final merit total is 250 marks — Mains and Interview only. And of those 250, 150 are descriptive answers: the whole of Paper I plus the descriptive half of Paper II. That is 60% of your rank riding on writing produced under time pressure.
Clear Prelims, certainly. But every hour spent beyond the sectional cut-off in Reasoning or Quant earns you zero rank.

The number that should change your plan
Nearly a quarter of the ARD paper is current affairs — new schemes, budget allocations for agriculture, MSP announcements, NABARD's own reports, production estimates, policy changes. That is more than any single academic subject, and it is the one part of ARD your B.Sc. gave you nothing for.
The next two slices — Soil & Water Conservation and Animal Husbandry & Poultry — are together worth almost as much, and both are routinely under-prepared by students who over-invest in agronomy.

The cutoff has been climbing while the intake shrinks. These are two different measures, so they are drawn as two charts with their own scales — each column starts at zero.

Read the trend, not the last line
The UR Phase 1 cutoff climbed from 41.75 to 54.50 in three cycles — nearly thirteen marks on a hundred-mark merit paper — while vacancies fell from 168 to 91. Preparing to last year's number is preparing to fail this year's paper.
A sane target is 60+ out of 100: roughly 60 correct out of the 80 ESI + ARD questions plus a solid General Awareness showing. Demanding, but reachable for an agriculture graduate who has genuinely covered the syllabus.

What a Grade A officer does
NABARD is a development bank, not a retail one. There are no counter duties and no individual loan-recovery targets. The work is institutional:
- Refinance and credit planning — appraising and sanctioning refinance to cooperative banks, RRBs and commercial banks lending into agriculture.
- Potential Linked Credit Plans — district-level credit projections that feed state and national plans.
- Rural infrastructure — appraising and monitoring projects financed through funds such as RIDF.
- Developmental programmes — SHG–Bank Linkage, Joint Liability Groups, Farmer Producer Organisations, watershed and tribal development projects.
- Supervision — inspection of State Cooperative Banks, District Central Cooperative Banks and RRBs.
- Coordination — with state governments, State Level Bankers' Committees and implementing agencies.
- Policy and research — sector studies, scheme design inputs and reporting.
Posting is anywhere in India — Head Office in Mumbai, Regional Offices in state capitals, district development offices and training establishments.

Can I apply for NABARD Grade A with a B.Sc. Agriculture degree?
Yes. A Bachelor's degree in any discipline with 60% (55% for SC/ST/PwBD) qualifies you for the RDBS General stream, and a B.Sc. Agriculture with 60% meets that. You do not need to wait for an agriculture-specialist vacancy — and the General stream carried 48 of the 85 RDBS posts in the 2025 cycle, far more than any specialist stream.
Does Prelims count towards the final selection?
No. Phase 1 is purely a gate. Your final merit is calculated on Mains (200 marks) plus the Interview (50 marks) — 250 marks in total. Within Prelims itself, only General Awareness, ESI and ARD (100 marks) count towards the Phase 1 merit score; the other five sections need only a sectional pass.
Is ARD easy marks if I am an agriculture graduate?
Partly. Your degree covers agronomy, soil, horticulture, animal husbandry and the rest well. But roughly 24% of the ARD paper is current affairs — schemes, budget allocations, NABARD initiatives, production data — and your degree gave you none of that. Agriculture graduates also tend to under-prepare soil and water conservation and animal husbandry, which together are worth over 23% of the paper. Treat ARD as an advantage, not a free pass.
How much time do I need to prepare?
Six months of consistent work is realistic from a B.Sc. Agriculture base — long enough to close ARD and ESI, build a current-affairs habit and get real practice at descriptive writing. Three to four months is possible if you already have a strong economy background and write well under time pressure. Under two months from a cold start is not realistic given how the cutoffs have moved.
Is there negative marking?
Yes — 0.25 marks are deducted for every wrong answer in the objective papers. With Phase 1 cutoffs rising sharply, disciplined attempting matters. Guess only when you can eliminate at least two options.
How many attempts do I get?
There is no limit on the number of attempts. The only constraint is the age window — 21 to 30 years, with the standard relaxations (OBC +3, SC/ST +5, PwBD +10/13/15).
What is the NABARD Grade A salary in hand?
Roughly ₹1.3 lakh a month. Basic pay is ₹62,500 following the November 2022 wage revision, with gross monthly emoluments of approximately ₹1,60,699. The exact in-hand figure varies with posting location and whether you take leased accommodation or HRA.
Should I apply for a Generalist or a Specialist post?
For most agriculture graduates, the General stream. It carried 48 posts in the 2025 cycle — the largest single pool — while agriculture-specialist streams like Plantation & Horticulture, Fisheries, Food Processing, Land Development & Soil Science and Agriculture Engineering typically carry one or two seats each. A specialist stream only makes sense if your qualification maps exactly to it and you are comfortable competing for a seat or two nationally.
When is the NABARD Grade A 2026 notification expected?
NABARD publishes a short advertisement first, with the detailed notification a few days later. In the 2025 cycle the advertisement appeared on 4 November 2025, the detailed notification on 8 November, applications ran 8–30 November, Phase 1 was on 20 December 2025 and Phase 2 on 25 January 2026. If the 2026-27 cycle follows the same rhythm, expect the advertisement around early November.
