Exam Pattern
NICL AO 2026 exam pattern: Prelims, Mains and Interview
Selection runs in three stages, followed by a medical fitness check. The figures below show each stage's share of the final merit list.
Phase I: Prelims (same for all disciplines)
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time | Medium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 min | English |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 min | English / Hindi |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 35 | 35 | 20 min | English / Hindi |
| Total | 100 | 100 | 60 min |
There are no agriculture questions in the Prelims.
Phase II: Mains objective (Specialist, incl. Agriculture)
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time | Medium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning | 40 | 40 | 35 min | English / Hindi |
| General Awareness | 40 | 40 | 20 min | English / Hindi |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 40 | 40 | 35 min | English / Hindi |

Phase II: Descriptive test (online, typed)
| Component | Marks |
|---|---|
| Essay | 10 |
| Precis | 10 |
| Comprehension | 10 |
| Total | 30 marks · 30 minutes · English |
Total Mains duration: 210 minutes (objective + descriptive).
How marking and shortlisting work
- Negative marking: 1/4 of the marks for a question is deducted for each wrong answer in the Prelims and the Mains objective test. Unanswered questions carry no penalty.
- Prelims: you must clear each section. About 15 times the vacancies in each category are shortlisted for Mains.
- Mains: there is a sectional minimum and an overall minimum in the objective test. The descriptive test is evaluated only for those who clear the objective test.
- The descriptive test is qualifying only. It does not count for interview shortlisting or the final merit.
- Final merit: Mains objective : Interview = 80 : 20. NICL sets minimum qualifying marks for the interview.
- Tie-break: higher interview marks first, then the older candidate. A waiting list of up to 50% of vacancies may be prepared.
- Scores are equated across sessions and reported to two decimals. Cut-offs apply in two stages: sectional, then total.

Exam structure
IBPS AFO tests Professional Knowledge in both Prelims and Mains. In NICL AO, agriculture is tested in the Mains as a 50-mark section.
Pay
NICL's starting basic is about 1.7 times IBPS AFO's (₹82,485 vs ₹48,480).
Eligibility
NICL sets a 60% minimum (55% for SC/ST/PwBD); IBPS AFO has no minimum percentage.
Timing works for both
IBPS AFO Mains (1 Nov) falls before NICL Prelims (17 Nov), so you can move straight from one to the other.
Preparing for IBPS AFO as well? See Agriguru's ASTHRA IBPS AFO course. IBPS figures are from the IBPS CRP SPL-XVI notification dated 01.07.2026; the revised vacancy count and exam dates are as reported by secondary sources.
Previous Year Cut-off
NICL AO previous year cut-offs, and why there is none for Agriculture
Agriculture was not part of the 2024 or 2025 recruitment, so no recent Agriculture cut-off exists. The closest reference is how other specialist posts fared. In 2024, the UR Prelims cut-off ran from 21 (Automobile Engineers) to 79.5 (Generalist), so cut-offs vary widely from post to post. Nobody can predict the Agriculture cut-off, so we don't publish an "expected" figure.
NICL AO 2024 Prelims cut-off (out of 100)
| Post | UR | EWS | OBC | SC | ST |
