On 21 August 2026 the High Court of Kerala issued a notification inviting online applications for the post of Gardener under Recruitment No. 15/2026. It is a direct recruitment to a post in the High Court establishment at Kochi.
It is a small notification in vacancy count, but a genuinely rare one. Very few Kerala government notifications treat a VHSE Agriculture or a Diploma in Gardening as the core qualifying qualification. If you hold one of those, this vacancy was written for you.

The ranked list stays alive for at least one year and can run up to two. Any vacancy arising during that period is also filled from the same list. The effective number of appointments can therefore be higher than the five posts notified today. Do not skip the application just because the vacancy count looks small.

03Eligibility: age and qualification
🎓 Educational qualification
You must satisfy all three of the following:
1. SSLC or equivalent
The basic academic requirement. An equivalent qualification is accepted, but you must produce the Government order proving equivalence when called for.
2. A gardening or agriculture qualification
Any one of the four listed courses below. This is the real filter for this recruitment.
3. Good physique
Listed as a qualification in the notification. Gardener work is physical and outdoors.
The four qualifying courses, exactly as named in the notification, are:

Two rules in the notification catch people out every year. First, every qualification must be acquired on or before the closing date of the online application — a course you finish in October will not count. Second, a qualification declared equivalent by Government after the notification was issued will not be accepted for this selection. Check your certificate against the list now, not in December.
🎂 Age limit
The notification fixes eligibility by date of birth rather than by a plain age range. Both days are inclusive:

Further relaxations available under the notification:
- Ex-servicemen, ex-General Reserve Engineer Force personnel and disembodied Territorial Army personnel may exclude their period of defence service, plus the period of unemployment after discharge up to a maximum of 5 years, provided they have not completed 50 years of age.
- Low Vision and Deaf or Hard of Hearing candidates get up to 15 years of age concession; other benchmark disability categories get up to 10 years. In no case can the upper age limit exceed 50 years.
- Widows get up to 5 years of relaxation, again subject to the 50-year ceiling.
04Reservation for differently abled candidates
Under Rule 11(2) of the Kerala High Court Service Rules, 2007, 4% of vacancies in the Gardener category are reserved for eligible differently abled candidates. Per G.O. (P) No. 5/2024/SJD dated 07.02.2024, the suitable categories of benchmark disability for this post are:
Low vision
Also eligible for the 15-year age concession.
Deaf and hard of hearing
Also eligible for the 15-year age concession.
Locomotor disability
Including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism and acid attack victims, with minimum one functional arm and one functional leg.
Autism, intellectual and learning disability
Autism spectrum disorder (mild), intellectual disability, specific learning disability, mental illness (40% to 70%).
Multiple disability
Involving a combination of the above categories.
Functional requirement
Sitting, standing, walking, bending, kneeling and crouching, manipulation by fingers, and seeing.
✍️ Scribe and compensatory time
- Candidates whose writing speed is affected may use a scribe. You must indicate this in the online application and confirm it in your profile once the exam date is declared. Only candidates who confirm in the profile will be permitted a scribe.
- A medical certificate and declaration in the prescribed format (available under Downloads on the recruitment portal) must be produced at the time of the test. The scribe must hold a qualification at least one step below the minimum prescribed for the post.
- Differently abled candidates, whether or not they use a scribe, get 20 minutes of compensatory time per hour of examination, on production of a medical certificate confirming a physical limitation to write.
- Candidates claiming age relaxation must produce a job-oriented physical and functionality certificate as per G.O. (P) No. 5/2023/SJD dated 01.10.2023 at the time of certificate verification.
05How the selection works
This is the part of the notification most people misread. The High Court has not fixed the selection method yet. It will decide based on how many valid applications come in:
Route A — Interview only
Total 50 marks. Minimum 20 marks to enter the ranked list. The interview assesses your theoretical and practical knowledge of gardening and your suitability for the post.
Route B — Written test + interview
Written test of 100 marks plus an interview of 10 marks. Minimum 40 marks in the written test to enter the ranked list.
You have to prepare as if the written test is happening. If it does not happen, that same knowledge is exactly what the 50-mark interview tests — theoretical and practical gardening. Under both routes the subject matter is identical. There is no version of this selection where knowing your gardening well does not pay.
Note the weightings carefully. Under Route B the interview is worth only 10 marks against the written test's 100. Under Route A the interview is the entire selection. So the written test, if held, is very nearly the whole game.

⏱️ 100 questions in 75 minutes = 45 seconds per question
At 1/4 negative, four wrong answers wipe out one correct answer. If you are genuinely down to a 50-50 guess, the odds are still in your favour. If you have no idea at all, leaving it blank is the better decision. The qualifying mark is 40 out of 100 — but remember that clearing 40 only puts you in the running; the ranked list is built on merit, so aim well above it.
📄 Two things about the questions
- The medium is English. This matters if you studied the VHSE syllabus in Malayalam. Start reading horticulture terminology in English now — botanical names, plant parts, tool names, propagation terms, pest and disease names.
- 45 seconds per question means recall, not reasoning. This is a memory-and-familiarity paper. The way to get fast is repetition of the standard course material, not clever technique.
07What to study
The notification does not publish a topic-by-topic syllabus. What it says is precise and useful:
The written test will comprise 100 objective multiple choice questions based on the syllabus for the Diploma in Gardening, VHSE Nursery Management and Ornamental Gardening, VHSE Agriculture (Plant Protection) and VHSE Agriculture.
In other words, your own course syllabus is the exam syllabus. There is no separate general knowledge, reasoning or aptitude section mentioned. The topics below are the areas those four courses cover — treat this as an indicative map to organise your revision, and always work from your actual VHSE or Diploma textbooks and the official course syllabus as the authority.

Because the paper is drawn from four course syllabi that heavily overlap, the shared core is where most questions have to come from: propagation, nursery practice, ornamental plant identification, garden operations, and plant protection. Master that core first. Cover the course-specific corners afterwards.
08Salary and pay scale
The Gardener post carries the following notified scale of pay in the High Court of Kerala:
Plus Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and other admissible allowances
Beyond the pay itself, this is a post in the High Court establishment. The usual Kerala government service benefits apply — periodic increments in the scale, revision of pay on successive Pay Commissions, leave entitlements and the applicable pension or contributory pension scheme.
The scale of Rs 23,700 to Rs 52,600 is the basic pay range, not your monthly take-home. Your actual gross will be the basic plus DA and HRA at the rates in force. Allowance rates change with government orders, so treat any in-hand figure circulating on social media with caution — the notification itself commits only to the scale.

Two further timing points from the notification, worth putting in your calendar now:
- Admission tickets for the written test become downloadable three weeks before the test date.
- Call letters for the interview become downloadable two weeks before the interview.
You are intimated by SMS and email, but the notification puts the responsibility on you: visit the recruitment portal at least once a week to check the schedule. If you cannot download your admission ticket, contact the High Court on 0484-2562235. If no communication reaches the High Court from you at least one week before the test or interview, you alone are held responsible for not receiving it.
The notification itself advises candidates to apply well before the closing date, because portal login failures on the final day are your problem, not the High Court's. Apply in the first half of September and keep the printout.
10How to apply, step by step
Applications are accepted only through the High Court recruitment portal at hckrecruitment.keralacourts.in. No other mode of application is accepted in any circumstance.
Complete One Time Registration
Use the One Time Registration Login link on the portal. This must be done before you can apply for the post. The full steps are given under the How to Apply link on the site.
Keep your scans ready
You need a scanned passport-size photograph and signature. In the photograph the face and shoulders must be clearly visible, the face centrally focused, and the background white or light coloured. Read the Guidelines for Photograph and Signature under How to Apply before scanning.
Fill My Profile
Enter your qualification details, community, and all other particulars. Anything you do not specifically claim in the correct field will not be considered at a later stage — so claim every relaxation and preference you are entitled to, here.
Apply from the Dashboard
Use Apply Now in the Dashboard and follow the on-screen instructions. Check the preview carefully. Once submitted, no editing or modification is possible.
Pay the fee — this is the last stage
Rs 600, by system-generated challan or online via debit card, credit card, net banking or UPI. Bank transaction charges are borne by you. An application without completed fee payment is incomplete and will not be considered. For online payment, confirm success on the portal even if your bank sends a success SMS.
Take a printout and keep it
Save the printout for your own records. Do not post the printout or any documents to the High Court — they are not required.

Payment by demand draft, cheque, money order or postal order is not accepted. The fee once paid is not refunded and cannot be held in reserve for another examination. If the notification itself is cancelled, the remitted fee is refunded to the designated bank account.
📄 Documents you must produce when called
- Originals proving age, qualification, community, non-creamy layer status and economically weaker section status, as applicable. Failure to produce them means cancellation of candidature.
- Caste, non-creamy layer and EWS certificates must be valid on the closing date of the online application or on the date of certificate verification.
- Serving Government employees (Central or any State) must indicate this in the application and obtain a No Objection Certificate or Service Certificate from their Head of Office. The NOC format is available under Downloads on the portal. Failure to submit it when called for cancels candidature.
- Candidates applying from abroad must email their location and public IP address to recruitment.hckerala@nic.in to be granted portal access, and must email again after completing the application.
The notification is blunt about three things. Canvassing in any form cancels your candidature. Misbehaviour or malpractice during the test or interview can get you debarred from all future High Court posts, permanently or for a fixed period. And appearing with an edited or modified admission ticket instead of the one downloaded from the portal means disqualification and debarment. Furnishing false information cancels candidature at any stage — and can terminate your service even after appointment.
11Preparation strategy
You have roughly a month to apply and, if a written test is held, most likely a few months before it. Here is how to use that time.
Settle eligibility and apply
Check your certificate against the four qualifying courses. Confirm your date of birth falls in your category's window. Get your community, non-creamy layer or EWS certificate in order if it has expired. Then complete the One Time Registration and submit the application. Do not leave this to the last week.
Rebuild the core from your own textbooks
Go back to your VHSE or Diploma course material. Cover propagation, nursery practice, ornamental plant identification, soil and manures, and plant protection. These are the shared core of all four syllabi and the likeliest source of questions.
Fix the English terminology
The paper is in English. Build a running glossary: botanical names of common ornamentals, plant parts, propagation terms, tool names, pest and disease names, fertiliser and pesticide terms. If you studied in Malayalam this single step is worth more than any other.
Practise at exam speed
45 seconds per question. Do timed sets of 100 questions. Learn your own guessing threshold under 1/4 negative marking — which questions you should attempt on partial knowledge and which you should leave.
Prepare for the interview in parallel
Under either route there is an interview, and it tests practical as well as theoretical gardening knowledge. Be ready to talk about work you have actually done — plants you have raised, pests you have handled, tools you have used. The notification prefers candidates with horticulture and farm experience; make sure yours comes through.

12Mistakes to avoid
Assuming a degree qualifies you
A B.Sc Agriculture is not on the list. Only the four named courses qualify, and post-notification equivalence is not accepted.
Stopping at the application fee
Fee payment is the last stage of the process. An unpaid application is incomplete and is simply not considered.
Not claiming a relaxation in the form
Anything not specifically claimed in the correct field will not be entertained later. Claim it at the time of applying.
Waiting to see if there is a written test
The method is decided by the number of applications. By the time you know, you have lost your preparation window.
Ignoring the English medium
The questions are only in English. Malayalam-medium candidates who skip the terminology work lose marks they actually knew the answers to.
Guessing blindly
At 1/4 negative, four blind guesses cost you a correct answer. Guess on partial knowledge, not on nothing.
Skipping the portal for weeks
The notification asks you to check weekly. Admission tickets appear three weeks before the test and the responsibility for missing them is yours.
Treating 40 marks as the target
40 is the minimum to enter the ranked list, not to get appointed. With 5 vacancies, the ranked list is built on merit.
13FAQs
What is the last date to apply?
26 September 2026 for the online application and online fee payment. If you are paying the fee offline by challan, that window runs separately from 30 September 2026 to 7 October 2026.
Can I apply with a B.Sc Agriculture degree?
Not on the strength of the degree alone. The notification names four qualifying courses — Diploma in Gardening, VHSE Nursery Management and Ornamental Gardening, VHSE Agriculture (Plant Protection) and VHSE Agriculture. If you hold one of those in addition to your SSLC, you are eligible. If you claim an equivalent qualification, you must produce the Government order proving equivalence, and equivalence declared after this notification was issued will not be accepted.
Will there definitely be a written test?
No. The High Court decides between interview-only and written test plus interview, having regard to the number of valid applications received. Prepare as though the written test is happening — the subject knowledge is the same either way, because the interview also assesses theoretical and practical gardening knowledge.
How many marks do I need to be included in the ranked list?
If selection is by interview only, 20 out of 50. If selection is by written test and interview, 40 out of 100 in the written test. Both are minimums for inclusion in the list, not a guarantee of appointment.
Is there negative marking?
Yes, in the written test. One-fourth of a mark is deducted for every incorrect answer.
What language will the question paper be in?
English. The notification states the medium of the questions will be English.
Where will the written test be held?
At Ernakulam, if a written test is conducted.
What is the age limit?
General candidates must be born between 2 January 1986 and 1 January 2008, both days inclusive — roughly 18 to 40 years. For OBC the window starts 2 January 1983, and for SC/ST it starts 2 January 1981. Ex-servicemen, differently abled candidates and widows get further relaxations, subject to an upper limit of 50 years.
Only 5 vacancies. Is it worth applying?
The ranked list remains in force for a minimum of one year and up to two years, and vacancies arising during that period are also filled from the same list. The eligible pool is also unusually small, because only holders of four specific gardening and agriculture courses can apply. The odds are better than the headline number suggests.
Is the application fee refundable?
No. The fee once paid is not refunded and cannot be held in reserve for another examination. The only exception is cancellation of the notification itself, in which case the fee is refunded to the designated bank account.
I am working in a government department. Can I apply?
Yes, but you must indicate it in the online application and obtain a No Objection Certificate or Service Certificate from your Head of Office or Department. The format is available under the Downloads link on the recruitment portal. If you fail to submit it when called for, your candidature stands cancelled.
Where do I check for official updates?
