Development & NGOs
Create systemic change - work with international bodies, government missions, and grassroots NGOs.
For agriculture graduates who want to tackle food insecurity, farmer distress, and rural poverty at the system level, the development sector offers meaningful careers at UN agencies, international NGOs, domestic development organisations, and government rural missions - all of which actively hire agri graduates.
About This Path
What does this career actually look like?
India's development sector is one of the largest employers of agriculture graduates outside the government and private sectors. The ecosystem spans five layers: international organisations (FAO, IFAD, WFP, UNDP, World Bank) that hire Indian nationals for India-based and global assignments; premier domestic NGOs (PRADAN, DHAN, WOTR, AKRSP, MYRADA) that run intensive farmer-welfare programmes; government rural missions (NRLM, ATMA, PMGSY, Mission Shakti) that deploy thousands of block and district level workers; CGIAR and global research institutes with India offices; and corporate CSR teams that manage ₹3,000+ crore in annual agri-focused spending. The career path typically starts at a domestic NGO, progresses through programme management roles, and can culminate in UN system positions or senior government advisory roles.
