What does this career actually look like?
Teaching careers in agriculture are governed by two main systems. State agricultural universities (SAUs) - TNAU in Tamil Nadu, ANGRAU in Andhra Pradesh, GBPUAT in Uttarakhand, PAU in Punjab, BAU in Bihar, JNKVV in Madhya Pradesh, OUAT in Odisha, and 70+ others - are the primary employers for college faculty. ICAR's Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) network - 731 centres spread across every district - employs Subject Matter Specialists (SMS) who do hands-on farmer extension work. The ASRB NET exam is the gateway to both. A parallel and increasingly lucrative track is private coaching for agriculture competitive exams (ICAR JRF, IBPS AFO, state PSC) - coaching educators with strong communication skills and subject depth are earning more than government salaries at scale.

Basic eligibility checklist
- M.Sc Agriculture is mandatory for KVK SMS and SAU Assistant Professor roles - a B.Sc alone is not sufficient
- ASRB NET qualification is required for ICAR KVK and most permanent SAU faculty appointments
- PhD is increasingly preferred for permanent SAU positions; mandatory for Associate Professor and above

Secure your M.Sc with ICAR JRF
Year 1–3ICAR JRF is the ideal way to fund M.Sc - the fellowship covers tuition and pays ₹31,000/month. Discipline choice matters: Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, and Genetics produce the most KVK and SAU vacancies every year.
Clear ASRB NET
6–9 months post M.ScASRB NET qualifies you for KVK SMS and SAU Assistant Professor posts. Prepare for 6–9 months post M.Sc. The exam has two parts: Part A (General Agriculture) and Part B (Discipline-specific). Held twice a year.
Apply to KVK and SAU openings simultaneously
OngoingICAR advertises KVK SMS posts on its official recruitment portal. SAU vacancies appear on university websites and state public service portals. Set alerts for both. Apply broadly - selections can take 6–18 months.
Start coaching as a parallel income
Year 2 onwardsWhile waiting for government postings, teaching students preparing for ICAR JRF, IBPS AFO, and state PSC is a viable income stream. Many Agriguru mentors follow this exact model - coaching income can exceed government salaries.
Complete PhD for long-term growth
Year 4–8A PhD accelerates promotion from Assistant to Associate Professor and opens Senior Scientist and Principal Scientist tracks at ICAR. IARI New Delhi is the gold standard. Full-time PhD is accessible via ICAR SRF after your JRF-funded M.Sc.
