Research & Higher Studies
For those who want to go deeper - fellowships, premier institutes, and research that matters.
If you thrive on understanding why crops behave the way they do, research is your calling. This path leads to ICAR JRF/SRF fellowships, GATE-AG scores, and PhD positions at premier institutes like IARI, ANGRAU, TNAU, and PAU - and eventually to Scientist posts, faculty roles, or international research careers.
About This Path
What does this career actually look like?
Research in Indian agriculture has never been more relevant - or better funded. The ICAR JRF is the gateway: it funds two years of M.Sc and then your PhD at over 100 ICAR institutes with a monthly fellowship. ASRB NET qualifies you for the prestigious Agricultural Research Service (ARS), which is the central-government equivalent of IAS for scientists. State agricultural universities (TNAU, ANGRAU, GBPUAT, PAU, JNKVV, OUAT, and 60+ others) run their own entrance tests for M.Sc and PhD. Beyond India, CGIAR centres like ICRISAT (Hyderabad), IRRI (India office), and international fellowships (Fulbright-Nehru, DAAD, Erasmus+) open global research careers to Indian agri graduates. The trajectory: JRF β M.Sc β SRF β PhD β Scientist B or Assistant Professor.

Step-by-Step
Your roadmap into this path
Choose your discipline
Week 1β2Pick from: Agronomy, Plant Pathology, Genetics & Plant Breeding, Soil Science, Horticulture, Agricultural Economics, Animal Science, or Fisheries. ICAR JRF has separate papers for each. Pick based on your BSc specialisation and genuine interest - not trending topics.
Crack ICAR JRF / CSIR NET
Months 1β8ICAR JRF (June each year): focus on Part A (General Agriculture) + Part B (Discipline-specific). CSIR NET (June & December): for plant biology, biochemistry, and biotech streams. Prepare for 6β9 months with PYQs as your primary resource.
Secure your M.Sc seat
Months 8β10Use your JRF rank to apply to IARI, NDRI, IIHR, CIFE, VPKAS, and state SAUs. Rank determines your institute preference. Even a state SAU M.Sc with a strong thesis and publications is a solid foundation.
Publish & build your research profile
Year 2β3During M.Sc, aim for at least one research publication (even a conference paper). A JRF-supported M.Sc with publications significantly improves your chances in ARS direct recruitment and international PhD applications.
Clear ASRB NET / ARS or target PhD abroad
Year 3β5ASRB NET qualifies you for Scientist B and Assistant Professor roles. ARS direct recruitment fills ~200β400 Scientist B posts yearly. Alternatively, use your research profile for fully-funded PhDs at CGIAR, Wageningen, or Australian/US universities.
